This is why I do it!

It's days like today in clinic that make all of what I've experienced this far in pursuing this career worthwhile and rewarding. Our patient today was a very special and unique case. On top of it all, they had not taken any of their medications or had not eaten anything for breakfast despite being a diabetic. With the okay from faculty and close monitoring of vitals and the patient's disposition we were able to proceed with treatment. Although it was a challenge, it made me feel accomplished for working through it. The best way that I can describe it is by comparing it to solving a mystery or putting together a puzzle. This patient presented to clinic with a large variety of medical conditions that did indeed alter treatment. My partner and I had to pay extra close attention to details with this case in order to make sure that our patient was, most importantly, safe to continue treating, and as well as guide this patient to achieve optimal oral health.

Although this patient had many obstacles, it was definitely a path that I'm happy that we were able to have the chance to go down. This patient was cooperative, helpful, and understanding. His personality made me feel more comfortable to carry out treatment when usually I'm shy to complete assessment or debridement. He understood that it was difficult for me to work on the posterior teeth. With the use of his constructive criticism and useful feedback we were able to make it a comfortable and productive clinic session for everyone. This patient was extremely grateful and seemed to leave with a better attitude than what he walked in with.

Seeing my patient smile makes me smile.
